What have you had published?
I have published two novels, RAIN ON YOUR WEDDING DAY, which came out in 2013, and WREATHED, which came out last year. Earlier this year I published LIES I HAVE TOLD, a collection of humorous short stories I’ve written over the last five years. My short fiction has mostly been published in McSweeney’s Internet Tendency.

What genre(s) of book do you write?
Both RAIN ON YOUR WEDDING DAY and WREATHED are contemporary romance novels. RAIN ON YOUR WEDDING DAY borders on literary fiction—it’s the story of an aging American football player who is dealing with the loss of most of his family. WREATHED is much more in the chick-lit tradition; it’s main character is a lonely, borderline-alcoholic attorney who meets her dream man at a funeral.

What inspired you to write your first book?
I drew a lot of material from RAIN ON YOUR WEDDING DAY from my own wedding (on which, needless to say, it rained buckets). My parents and my wife’s parents are both divorced, and there was a lot of underlying tension about how everyone would get along. The main antagonist in the book is the main character’s ex-wife, who emphatically does not want him at the wedding. Fortunately, we didn’t have any of the emotional fireworks in our real-life wedding.

How long did it take you to write “Wreathed”?
I started working on WREATHED in late June 2013 and finished the first draft in January 2014, so about six months, all told. It took a couple of more months to complete the revisions after I got the manuscript back from my editor, and then I went through another round of proofreading.
What is the working title of your next book(s)?
Right now, the next book is called THE SNOWBALL EFFECT. It takes place on an interstellar spaceship, and has some romance elements and a murder mystery.

When and why did you begin writing?
I started writing movie reviews in the early 1990’s – the first one I did was for a Jackie Chan movie, although I can’t remember which one. I think writing movie reviews is good practice for anyone who wants to write, because it lets you develop your own voice and it helps you figure out why you like the things that you like. I like to think I was good at it, although I never got to do it professionally—there were a lot of other amateur movie reviewers out there at the same time, due to the internet, and I just never got myself in a position where I could get paid for it. I finished my first manuscript in 2003 and my second in 2009, but I couldn’t get either of them published.

Do you self publish your books or go through an agency?
I am a self-publisher. I don’t take a lot of pride in that, mind you. I’d rather have an agent and a publisher, but it hasn’t shaken out that way. I don’t mind. Every book I sell as a self-publisher is a book that someone sitting in an office in New York City didn’t think I could ever sell, and that’s fine with me.

What part of writing books do you find the hardest?
Finding and correcting mistakes. I like to think of myself as a careful editor, but every time—every single time!—I get something back from an editor or a proof-reader, I feel incredibly stupid for making elementary mistakes. Even after I correct them, you still have problems—even problems you think you’ve corrected. For RAIN ON YOUR WEDDING DAY, I have two of my characters sitting in a restaurant and ordering refills on their coffee from the server. Sounds fine, right? What I forgot was that they were in an American chain restaurant called the International House of Pancakes. Most of those restaurants serve coffee in large pitchers, with a warming element right on the table, so you don’t have to pester your server for refills. Embarrassing. For WREATHED, I somehow managed to put out a print version where the heading for Chapter Nine showed up as plain text. You do everything you can, and you still end up with basic mistakes that you’d never make if you put a moment’s thought into them.

What do you do in your spare time?
I cook barbecue. I am from Texas and live in New Jersey, and you simply can’t get good Texas barbecue in New Jersey. It’s much easier and more effective to make it myself, so that’s what I do. I have a large cast-iron grill with a fire-box attached to it, and every so often I load it up with brisket or ribs or sausage and cook it low and slow at two hundred degrees for hours on end. It’s beautiful.

Who is your favourite author?
Mark Helprin is our greatest living author, and I’ll stand on Phillip Roth’s coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that. I will say that I didn’t much like his last two novels—one was a very silly satire of Prince Charles that just never got over the mean-spirited attitude, and the last one was an overwrought melodrama set in post-war New York. But even in the bad books, the writing is just splendid, and the best of his books are simply irreplaceable.

What’s your favourite genre to read?
I absolutely devour military-based historical fiction. Bernard Cornwell is my current favorite in that genre. I read a lot of military non-fiction, too—I really like the work of Winston Groom, who wrote FORREST GUMP, but does a lot of really excellent non-fiction as well. The one thing I won’t read is romance books, which is odd because I’ve written two of them. Unaccountable of me, really.

Do you have any advice for other writers?
I think all advice to writers is basically variations on the same thing, and that is to be considerate to the poor reader. Your average reader spends his or her days doing mind-numbing, thankless work, all day every day, and then comes home and handles all their domestic chores, whatever they may be, watches an hour or so of television, and then gets into bed with their e-reader to knock off a couple of pages before they collapse into unconsciousness. You owe that person your best efforts. Don’t bore them, don’t condescend to them, and don’t waste their time on boring sub-plots that don’t go anywhere or on characters that are empty-headed puppets. Make your readers happy and the rest will fall into place over time.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Well, obviously you should buy all of my books on Amazon right now, and review them, and tell all of your friends about them. (Don’t tell your enemies, though, because what have they ever done for you? Nothing.) After that, you should do what you like. Drink delicious, tasty beer! (I am a Texan, so I’ll recommend Shiner Bock if you can get it, or Newcastle Brown Ale if you can’t.) Eat delicious, tasty ice cream! (I make my own ice cream, thank you very much, and I’m actually overdue for making some of my favorite flavor, butterscotch pecan.) Take a nice walk by a gurgling stream. Under my real name, Jackie Papandrew, I've published two humor books called Days of Derangement and The Desperate Dad's Guide to Getting Some. These two books were based on my humor column, which ran for several years in about a dozen newspapers. Most of these newspapers were smaller, community publications, but the list included larger newspapers such as The Oklahoman and The Tampa Tribune. Under my pen name, J.D. Brick, I've published one novel so far. Tangled Up in Blue is the first in a New Adult romance series called Ikana College.
What genre(s) of book do you write?
I write humorous non-fiction and contemporary romance.
What inspired you to write your first book?
I've been writing as a journalist, technical writer and humor columnist for many years. I'd always wanted to write a novel, but somehow never got around to doing it. When my husband and I sold the business we'd spent 10 years building and my children went to college, I finally decided it was 'now or never' and sat down to do it. I've long been a romance reader and especially enjoy the New Adult category, so I decided to try my hand at it.
How long did it take you to write “Tangled Up in Blue”?
The idea first occurred to me about a year ago, but I only worked on it sporadically until about four months ago. Then I focused as much of my time and attention as possible on writing and revising it. So I'd say it took roughly four months. There were still days when I could not work on it at all, but that's a fair estimate of the time it took.
What is the working title of your next book(s)?
Shelter from the Storm is Book 2 in the Ikana College series. I'm writing that now. Book 3 is tentatively titled Never Say Goodbye. I'm also working on a work of historical fiction called Hearts on the Ground and another contemporary romance (with a main character in her 40s) called Curve.
When and why did you begin writing?
I've been a voracious reader since I learned to read. I majored in journalism in college and spent years writing all kinds of non-fiction, including news, technical and business writing, as well as the humor column I started when my children were small. I used to write stories as a child and somehow always saw myself as a writer.
Do you self publish your books or go through an agency?
I self-published my humor books and Tangled Up in Blue.
What part of writing books do you find the hardest?
The necessity of focusing solely on the writing and not being distracted by all of the others things that so easily claim my attention. Without the discipline of the daily or weekly deadlines that you have in journalism, fiction writing requires a tremendous amount of self-discipline.
What do you do in your spare time?
Read! It's my favorite thing to do. I'm also a devoted, if often unsuccessful, gardener. And I love to dance when I can get my husband to go with me. I also love spending time with family and friends.
Who is your favourite author?
That's always such an impossible question for me to answer. I discover, and re-discover, authors all the time that I fall in love with. Some of my current favorites include Anthony Doerr, Gillian Flynn and Leah Raeder. Annie Dillard and Edward Abbey are a couple of authors (both of fiction and non-fiction) I don't see mentioned very often but that I return to over and over again.
What’s your favourite genre to read?
Again a hard question to answer. I read in almost every genre and enjoy great writing wherever I can find it. But I do love historical fiction and literary fiction.
Do you have any advice for other writers?
Don't do what I did and put off writing fiction for years if it's something you really want to do. Find the time, somehow. Write every day. It's the same advice you'll see over and over again, but it's so true. Just do it. And another nugget of truth that's become a cliché now, but is absolutely vital: Read. Obsessively, constantly, in a wide range of genres. Read the best writers and soak it in.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
I'd like to thank you for interviewing me and to thank any readers who might see this. I'd love to hear from anyone who reads Tangled Up in Blue. Let me know what you think.Katie L Thompson Designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08802812700497367955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1190328313160425533.post-60848487837203695602015-04-15T10:45:00.000-07:002015-04-15T10:45:13.770-07:00Blog Tour: Dangerous Love

The end of March means one thing for me and many other writers... Camp NaNoWriMo is nearby! And this time, I've even planned my novel out in advance. Stay tuned to find out more about April, Harriet and Jenny in my new romance novel.

Other exciting things to follow in the upcoming months:
Reviews:
I have several outstanding reviews to write. Including:
1. Pamela Srey "Paradise" - I've been waiting for this book to come out for years, and I'm not exaggerating. "Melodies" - Book One in the series - was published August 2012.
2. Isabel Morin "Keep Me" - I have given all her other books 5 star reviews and I'm not expecting any less from this one.
3. Katie Fforde "A Christmas Feast" which I finished reading a month ago and haven't reviewed yet.
4. Katie Fforde "Vintage Weddings" which is currently my favourite book and has been read many times over.

Posts:
I have Kara Leigh Miller joining me twice this month with her new book "Dangerous Love".

Interviews:
I don't currently have any planned, but if you're interested, I'm always willing to host - just send me a quick message.

On another note, I have finally put my head down and started my new art website. It needs a bit of work and a lot more art, but it's getting there. I hope you'll take a look.

Until next time...Katie L Thompson Designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08802812700497367955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1190328313160425533.post-23122083470216548042015-02-27T10:56:00.003-08:002015-02-27T11:34:25.342-08:00Interview: MJ MeadsWhat have you had published?
I am a first time novelist and this will be my first published work.

What genre(s) of book do you write?
I certainly find myself drawn to write stories with a romantic element, although the relationship is usually only part of a wider social commentary. Perhaps Romantic Drama is more appropriate, or RomDram.

What inspired you to write your first book?
This book has been floating around in my head and on various scraps of paper for ten years or more. It was inspired by stories and life experiences I'd been privy to that I felt weren't reflected in contemporary fiction.

How long did it take you to write “Milk: A Modern Love Story”?
After losing 40,000 odd words in March 2014 and having to start again from scratch, it took around 10 months. The book did spend nine years in the conceptual stage though!

What is the working title of your next book(s)?
Toast. It will be a sequel to Milk. There seems to be a breakfast theme running through my titles!

When and why did you begin writing?
I've always considered myself a writer, starting with poetry when I was eight or nine years old. I worked in non-writing jobs for many years but I was eventually lucky enough to make a living copywriting and writing for social media.

Do you self publish your books or go through an agency?
I really only considered self-publishing, but I dipped a toe in the water with an agent to see if any would bite. I'm a huge fan of the democratisation of publishing, especially in the wake of e-readers. I wouldn't turn down a sizeable advance for 'Toast' though!

What part of writing books do you find the hardest?
Staring at that blank page waiting for something to happen. Also having to go through looking for continuity errors that crop up when you're writing over so many months.

What do you do in your spare time?
I enjoy visiting museums and galleries, I think all art is inextricably intertwined and I'd love to work in conjunction with a sculptor or painter in future. I love to cook too, food is an important part of my life and helps cushion the blow of a bad day in front of the computer.

Who is your favourite author?
It pains me to say this but I don't read as much as I should. I miss the era of the storyteller, the orator. I'd often rather read The Iliad aloud to someone than I would bury my head in a book. I enjoy reading Will Self's musings on modern life though.

What’s your favourite genre to read?
Anything funny, intentionally or otherwise. I have a nasty habit of inventing characters voices in my head and so a well written joke makes me laugh out loud when reading on the train.

Do you have any advice for other writers?
I often hear or read the phrase “write the kind of book you'd like to read” but I'm not sure that's good advice. Write the book you want to write, don't let anybody tell you it's too niche, too complex, or not mass-market. If you're passionate about the subject you're writing on, that will show in your work.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Pip
" border="0" height="320" src="http://img1.fantasticfiction.co.uk/images/n18/n94620.jpg" width="208" />Freya North is one of my all time favourite authors. I have read every single one of her books at least once and have enjoyed them all. Some of them take a little while to get into but not "Pip". "Pip" throws you straight into the action, introducing you to the major characters and immediately pointing out everyone's quirks.

Alongside the three sisters, Pip, Fen and Cat, there's Django. I really think Django deserves a book to himself. He is such a well drawn character who fits in well with the sisters. I like how the author writes not only from Pip's point of view but also from the main male's viewpoint. The life between Zac, his ex and his child is nearly as interesting as Pip's.

As always, the plot is well thought out and structured. The writing flows almost effortless from one page to the next and you are drawn into a sort of trance between reality and the world which North has created.

Finally, there's Pip's career. The kind of career that only the best of author's could write into a book without making it seem daft and unbelievable.

5/5 Stars, a must read (I have done twice).Katie L Thompson Designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08802812700497367955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1190328313160425533.post-71402192596785775672015-01-30T13:33:00.000-08:002015-01-30T13:36:30.267-08:00Update #1

For the past month, I've been focusing more on reading than writing. Check back next month for reviews on Freya North's Pip and Katie Fforde's A Christmas Feast. However, I have made a start on my 'Goals'.

On Tuesday, I sent two stories to a short story magazine. Now I just have a 10-12 week wait until I find out the outcome. I am fully expecting two rejections, but no harm in trying, right?

On another note, Poisoned Blue, the first book in the Jamie Stanley Crime Scene Investigation series, is set up for a Kindle Countdown Deal this weekend. Get your copy for 99p/99¢ this Saturday/Sunday!

Poisoned Blue is the first book in the Jamie Stanley series. Jamie is a newly hired detective, solving her first case with two male investigators, giving them a run for their money. This story is a quick read and reminds me of an Agatha Christie mystery. We follow Jamie Stanley as she unravels the murder of a local business woman, combing over the evidence and teaching her two colleagues how it's done! I was impressed with author Katie L. Thompson's knowledge of police work and shocked to learn her age. She is a young talent who we will definitely be seeing more of! I enjoyed this first book from author Katie L Thompson and I look forward to more in this series! Way to go Katie! You gained a fan!

I loved reading this book. Thompson gives just enough information that I was kept interested and trying to work out who the murderer was, but I was never able to say exactly who it was. The plot develops well as more strands are brought into it and I felt like I really got to know the characters.

1. Win Camp NaNoWriMo April

Last year I set myself a target of 10,000 and achieved 23,000. This year, I aim to write 50,000 words in the month of April, although this may change nearer the time - depending what else I have to do.

2. Win Camp NaNoWriMo July

Last year I set myself a target of 50,000 and achieved the full 50,000. This year, I aim to write 50,000 words again, although this may change nearer the time - depending what else I have to do.

3. Win NaNoWriMo

I aim to win NaNoWriMo for the third year running.

4. Submit Short Stories to Magazines

What are your writing goals?

Happy New Year Everyone!

I hope 2015 brings you lots of happiness.

Katie L Thompson Designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08802812700497367955noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1190328313160425533.post-54120387329089842012014-12-31T02:10:00.003-08:002014-12-31T02:12:12.759-08:00Summing up 2014

As some of you may remember, in June I set myself a list of goals for the remainder of the year. Shall we take some time to revisit those goals?

1. Tweet!

I definitely achieved this goal. I went from a measly 62 followers to almost 1,100. I'd like to think I've made some twitter buddies, who will continue to support me in 2015 - of course, I will continue to support them too. If you're not currently following me, my twitter is @KatieLThompson1 - please follow, I won't bite :-)

2. Finish Cameron by the middle of October.

Tick. I did this too. Cameron is currently live on Amazon for any of you who fancy a peak. It is the second book in The Snowdon Sister Series, following on from Daisy.

Blurb:

With her sister, Daisy, about to get married Cameron Snowdon finds herself swamped with wedding preparation. However, not only does she not have time for a new man in her life, she doesn’t want one. After countless breakups Cameron decides to give up on men altogether. They just aren’t worth the hassle…

Cute, sexy and dependable are just some of the words that Cameron doesn’t want to use to describe Max Runacre, but she soon finds herself falling for the attractive man who is trying to capture her heart. Will Cameron stick to her original plan and give up on men or will she give Max a chance? And how far will she go to protect herself from the inevitable heartache?

3. Win Camp NaNoWriMo for the second time this year.

I set myself the challenge of writing Poisoned Blue, my first murder mystery novel. It turned out that Poisoned Blue did not want to be a full length novel and hence, I started writing a series of murder mystery novellas. My 50,000 word Camp NaNoWriMo challenge - yes I managed the whole 50K - split itself between #1 and #2 of the Jamie Stanley Crime Scene Investigation Series.

6. Win NaNoWriMo for the second year running.
In November, I introduced you to Casey Adams. Casey is a fourteen year old girl, the central character in my NaNoWriMo 2014 novel. You will be hearing more of Casey in 2015.
But that's not all.

Below is a list of other achievements.

1. Deathly White
I did not intend to write Deathly White, but since the first book in the series only made 23K, I had to write the second book in the series in order to reach my 50K target for Camp NaNoWriMo July.

2. Multicoloured Death Trap
Book #3 in the Jamie Stanley Crime Scene Investigation Series. I started writing this book in July and finished it in October before publishing it as part of the trilogy which I took with me to the book signing at Warfare.
4. Christmas Short Stories
Last year my Christmas story Sally's Christmas Cupid hit #131 in the free amazon charts. This year I've written four short stories for Christmas. Check the post below for more on these.

Overall, I think the second part of this year has been pretty successful (in terms of writing anyway). Join me tomorrow as I list my writing goals for 2015. In the meantime, why not check out my website for free extracts from all of my books?

Thank you for sticking by me this year.

I hope to see you all in 2015!

It's been a while since I last posted anything, but I hope you'll be able to forgive me. After last Christmas, when my short story Sally's Christmas Cupid rocketed to #131 in the free kindle chart, I decided that I wanted to write another short story for this year. I got a little carried away. This Christmas I have four new stories for you to dig in to.

My four new Christmas stories, along with Sally's Christmas Cupid will be free 24th-26th December. Please download, they're 100% free, and maybe we can smash last year's chart position.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

The new stories are listed in order of length (starting with the longest) and I've added Sally's Christmas Cupid on the end, just in case you've forgotten what it's about. All books are available to download from my Amazon Author Page.

Author Interview

What have you had published?
An Inspirational Romantic Suspense titled Revenge that releases December 16, 2014.

What genre(s) of book do you write?
I like to write Mystery, Suspense, and Romantic Suspense.

What inspired you to write your first book?
An old photo starring conveyer belts and one person assisting another brought forth the idea that would become Revenge.

How long did it take you to write “Revenge”?
The story only took a few weeks to draft, but the draft is only just the beginning of my process. Rewrites will often change the characters and move a plot forward.

What is the working title of your next book(s)?
You’ll laugh at this, but my titles don’t come until the book is completed in rewrites. Why? That answer is easy. My rewrites tend to change the story around and could then change a title. I tend to name my files as I’m working on them after one main character and the type of book it is for instance Revenge during my working stage was aptly named “Oliviaromsusp”.

When and why did you begin writing?
Writing naturally flowed from years of loving to read as a child. I often thought up stories even as a youngster. However, I didn’t actively start to consider this a serious endeavour until much later in life, during my own period of convalesce. It was my husband who encouraged me to write these stories down.

Do you self publish your books or go through an agency?
I published with Anaiah Press. Anaiah Press is a digital first publisher with a Mighty Presence inside a wonderful family atmosphere.

What part of writing books do you find the hardest?
The ever changing plot twists.

What do you do in your spare time?
Amateur photography and reading.

Who is your favourite author?
I don’t have one. I have many! My reading tastes go from Amish to Suspense within Christian Fiction and does include non-fiction and devotionals too.

What’s your favourite genre to read?
Romantic Suspense. However, I do love those Amish reads!

Do you have any advice for other writers?
Keep writing and reading but focus on more than one genre to find the ones you truly love.Katie L Thompson Designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08802812700497367955noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1190328313160425533.post-89110531262401901222014-12-07T13:06:00.002-08:002014-12-07T13:06:53.270-08:00Interview: CJ Heath

I’ve two books completed.

Dark Angel is a dark fantasy with a touch of romance. Rachael is the main character who is a soul too good for Hell but not pure enough for Heaven. There is a touch of the erotic too it but it’s not overly explicit with most ‘naughtiness’ occurring behind closed doors. Told in current day London, the story tells of a demon seeking to possess Rachael’s 600 year old soul in order to burn a corridor to Hell and permit all the Spawn to reap havoc in our world. Set against this are the Host of angels, led by Briathos who seek to thwart the demon and if possible, redeem the dark angel. Though it appears as a traditional good versus evil story, the truth is Rachael wishes to be on neither side and wants only to be left to her own devices and pleasures.

The second work is a very different story and more the kind of tale I would like to continue to create; Her Name is James is about an 18 year old boy who returns to the family home after 3 years in care. He is transgender and as he makes the decision to become she, James meets Tina. Tina is a friend from school who announces she has always loved him. The story explores familial conflict but mainly looks at James and his emotional assessment of who he is and where his life is heading, especially with regard to a possible future with Tina.

What genre(s) of book do you write?

I enjoy writing fantasy that entertains but my passion is for the authentic, ‘rip your heart out’, coming of age tales. I have to admit, I’m not one to naturally place a book within a single genre. Life doesn’t have one aspect, neither do my stories.

What inspired you to write your first book?

Although Dark Angel is the first published, James was written first. The largest inspiration for that was David Bowie’s song, Rebel Rebel:

She’s got her Mother in a whirl,

Not sure if she’s a boy or a girl.

It conjured an idea and I began to research the world of gender identity and found so much pain and love in that community, I wanted to share what I found but I wanted people to understand too.

How long did it take you to write “Her Name is James”?

It’s embarrassing to admit but I wrote James in just 6 weeks. I was dedicating myself to writing full-time in that period and writing James became a compulsion.

What is the working title of your next book(s)?

I have three on the go at the moment. A sequel to Dark Angel is titled Hell on Earth and there is another trans story currently called She’s Just a Poor Boy that I’m going to put on Wattpad a chapter a time. The third work is one I’m very excited about but has no title as yet. It’s set in 1953 England and is a pained romance between a macho gypsy boy and a soft and meek local lad. Their potential love isn’t going to be easy as aside from their love being illegal, the gypsy culture is a harsh environment. In addition, the fact the gypsy is engaged could prove volatile. Part of me is looking at the title Gypsy Boy but it doesn’t feel right.

When and why did you begin writing?

I remember my parents dropping me at my aunt’s house and my parents and my aunt and uncle went out leaving me with my older cousins, I would have been about 8. One of the amusements was we all went into different rooms to write a story. I wrote something about a werewolf and lost myself in the story. In retrospect I think it was just a way to keep me quiet and out of the way but in those few hours, I discovered I had worlds in my head I could vanish into. That was the start, that imagination amused me for a long time; it still does.

Do you self publish your books or go through an agency?

I’m self-published as I originally submitted a story to one single agent and it took so long to hear back, I decided I wasn’t prepared to go through that wait all over again. I may make another approach when my gypsy tale is ready as I’ve not been knocked back for my writing, merely for submitting ‘unsuited genres’.

What part of writing books do you find the hardest?

Staying focussed on one story. I have so many stories burst fully formed into my mind I am tempted to put a current work aside to move on to a new story (which is just what did for decades).

Tragically, if I’m not in my employed work, I’m generally at my laptop screen writing. I do have distractions of three grown sons and also, my wife and I make time for ourselves by walking the countryside. And of course, there’s always candy crush.

Every author has written a book that has let me down a little but the most consistently enjoyed writer I’ve found is David Gemmell. He was an author of traditional fantasy but his characters are so complex and engaging I can fall into his stories and not resurface until the closing page.

I do dip into many genres but my favourite is fantasy such as Terry Brooks, David Gemmell and Storm Constantine. Curiously, the stories I love writing are in genres I’d not read myself.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Set a routine. I have four days out of eight I have no commitments. On those days I’m in front of the laptop before 7am and write until the battery dies. Until I established this routine, I would prevaricate and delay. Days and weeks would pass and I’d produce nothing. Setting myself a specific time to write has given me the discipline I needed. In those two to three hours, I may write 4,000 words, I may write 100 but I know it is my opportunity; I try not to waste that time.

I have much more advice I’d gladly share but the discipline of a routine can’t be under-stated.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

I’d like to thank everyone for reading, not just this but books, all books. Any author will still write without a reader but it would be an unrequited love. When we write we put so much of our heart and soul into a story that it becomes a part of us, when you read our tales, you give us meaning.

Q&A

1) You had the idea for "A Very Postal Christmas" for two years before you started writing it. Why did you wait so long to start?

Well, the first year was a totally different story, but had the same characters. I lost all holiday inspiration after Christmas, so I quit writing it. I switched to a different post office before Christmas 2013 and my new co-workers loved this idea and the more we talked about the funny names and people who I based the characters on, new plot points came up in the conversation. I started it later in December last year again, but stopped because of the holiday inspiration being lost again. Now, this year with the start of Nanowrimo, I started this old idea a third time on Nov 1! I was determined to get this book out by December!

2) What encouraged you to start writing "A Very Postal Christmas"?

Everyone at work joked about me writing a book about the post office - so many co-workers have stories in that place. Anything from theft to affairs, they have it at the post office!

3) Where did the idea for the story come from?

I figure, what better time to write a story about the post office during the most hectic time of year, when everyone is crazy? LOL!

4) Tell us a little about your favourite character in the book.

The main character, Angel Noel. She is not based on anyone in real life (only a few of my characters are), but she is the person who does her best to give everyone a good Christmas. From reading about the characters, the reader understands that they never have a good holiday. Angel's name is the perfect name for her character!

5) What do you usually do around Christmas? Do you have any yearly traditions?

Me and my husband run around all day, going to our families homes. My parents are divorced, so we go to both houses (my mom cooks early), then later, go and visit my husband's extended family (Cousins and aunts) who are all together. We end up eating twice, but the meals are spaced out. The second house, which is my father's, is mainly for visiting. As for my husband and I, we open gifts that morning that we get each other. HIs mom and dad travel to Texas to see my brother-in-law and his family, so when they get home, we have Christmas with them around New Years Day. It's a busy day, so we are worn out by the time we get home.

“We’re going to have a Christmas party on Christmas Eve! Isn’t that fun?” Angel told her.

“Wait a minute,” Brandy stopped walking, “you mean I have to have a party with Cookie?”

“No, no, Brandy, you don’t have to interact with her. I am going to bring everyone together here in a few, to discuss the whole thing. It will be fun! Something different for us!” She smiled.

Brandy nodded. “So am I in trouble?”

“I tell you what. If you go along with this party, you will be fine. I think that’s a good rule for everyone.”

Brandy sighed. “I guess.”

“Hey,” Star approached Angel, taking her by her sleeve and leading her toward the break room. “What happened with hot-head Brandy?”

Angel told her it was just a little spat between girls and explained the party. “She’ll be okay.”

“I wouldn’t be too sure about that. Cookie was terrified.”

“Terrified? Come on! It’s just a little crush on Damien.”

“Angel!” Star clapped her hands together. “This is serious! What if Brandy kills her? That’s how scared Cookie was! She was crying!”

“Well, we’ll keep them separated. It can’t be that bad. They don’t even interact here. One’s always making labels while the other one is up here in the register room.”

“We don’t call it that anymore, Angel. It’s the paddle cage.”

“Whatever. I will take care of it. I think between me and Nicholas, we’ll do okay.”

“Hey.” Eve approached them. “Are you going into the break room?”

“Why?” Star asked her.

Eve shrugged. “I was just going to tell you that I would like to help with the party, Angel. I can’t wait! So exciting!”

“Thank you Eve!” Angel was thrilled as Star stood there, her mouth agape. “I’m going to call a meeting soon and we’ll discuss the details.”

Eve left them, as she entered the break room.

“Now Eve is willing to contribute! Oh Star, I think this might bring everyone together.”

“In harmony?” Star said with sarcasm.

Scrooge! Angel thought as Star walked away.

In the last days of October, Addiction (Book One of Beyond Life Series) was finally published. There are still three books to come, all already written but waiting to be translated to English.

What genre(s) of book do you write?
I have to admit that in the beginning I had some difficulties with the question of genres, but now I like to think of Beyond Life Series (as well as the novel I’m working on right now) as a dark romance. It combines elements of fantasy, suspense, and mystery but most of all it is a love story. My favourite review of Addiction was titled A Love Story, With a Heart of Darkness and I couldn’t have said it better myself.
It has multiple layers and I’ve noticed that people read it on different levels. Some get hooked on the relation between Adam and Mila and refuse to let anything disturb that. Others focus on other relations as well, exploring other questions… But enough about that. I wouldn’t want this to become a spoiler.

What inspired you to write your first book?
I believe that we all carry great stories in our souls, but all of us are just not story-tellers. Some people’s drive to express what they feel by writing it down is stronger than anything else, and that’s when a great book is set to life.
My inspiration is music. It was such a strong influence while writing Addiction and the other books of Beyond Life Series, that it makes it hard for me to listen to certain songs now. But then, whenever I need to get that special feeling back (which is really important during the translation process), all I have to do is sit in my car, play that special song, and it all comes back.

How long did it take you to write “Addiction”?
As I have already mentioned earlier, the book was translated from Slovene, so the entire process of actually getting the book into the state it is right now was much more complex than just writing it.
It took me about four, maybe five months to write it. I’m not really sure, because I started writing the next part immediately after Addiction was finished. Only after I had showed it to my best friend, who also happens to be the other half of B. L. Pride, the decision to do something with it started forming. I probably wouldn’t do anything but write on-end but Lea started bugging me about it and managed to convince me we should publish it. So she volunteered to do all the hard work and translate it–which she did so wonderfully I cannot even begin to say. Sure, she was struggling, much more than I will ever know, probably, but she maintained all the tiny little details and shades of emotions, moods, and whispers that I had seen, felt, and sensed while I had been writing it and to me, that is the most important.

What is the working title of your next book(s)?
The entire Beyond Life Series was and is titled Mila for the B.L Pride team. We always talk about Mila, never about the book or the novel or anything like that. So, choosing the right title was a long and troublesome quest, which, as did everything else, was immediately over as soon as we decided to just be true to ourselves and do what we like. The titles of the next books were born accordingly, so Addiction is followed by Insanity, The Breaking Point, and Infinity.
And the new story I’m working on is just as uncreatively titled Luke. So we all know who the main character is, huh? I’ll come up with something better when the time comes, though. Hopefully.

When and why did you begin writing?
It all began after ‘the most important’ things in life had been taken care of and I still felt like there was something really important missing. As a kid, I would write tons of stuff and never show them to anyone, and then the college, work, and family kicked in and kept me really busy for a while. But some things just can’t be ignored and writing is definitely one of them. I started when I needed some ‘therapy’ and now, I’m addicted.

Do you self publish your books or go through an agency?
Our first option was self-publishing but we soon decided we needed some help with the things that we found were dragging us down and shifting our focus from what we wanted to do (and believe we can do quite well) to the things we didn’t enjoy and didn’t do successfully. So we decided to try out AuthorHouse. We read a lot of both negative and positive posts and decided to give it a go. There is quite some negativity toward the vanity-published books but I tend to believe that the way of publishing (self-publishing, traditional publishing or vanity) does not guarantee that I will enjoy a book or put it down unread. It’s the story and the language that counts for me and I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels that way.

What part of writing books do you find the hardest?
Writing books is something I enjoy profoundly. I write when I feel I have something to write and don’t push myself when I don’t feel the drive. Maybe the hardest part is not being able to write because of the lack of time. This is something that really frustrates me and it’s not fun to be around me when that happens.
However, the publishing, marketing, and promotion business is not something I could enjoy. The only thing I like about wandering around completely lost and not knowing where to turn is having met some great people on the way.

What do you do in your spare time?
I write. Lea does the translations. We sit together and search for the best solutions. This is our spare time. B. L. Pride has two jobs, four kids, and two husbands (and a hole bunch of cats) so there is rarely some extra time left. However, we both love visiting concerts and use every opportunity to do it.

Who is your favourite author?
It’s really difficult to just choose one but if we’d have to choose, mine would be Sigrid Undset and Lea’s would be Aarto Paasilina. But there are a lot of great Slovene authors and Feri Lainšček would be our choice.

What’s your favourite genre to read?
We tend to read whatever makes us feel. There are so many things we like that come from different genres, so choosing only one would be just as difficult as choosing our favourite authors. I could say that my favourite genre is the eclectic fusion of unpredictability, romance, danger, and strange dark humour that challenges the mind.

Do you have any advice for other writers?
I think that writing is the most personal, intimate thing in the world, and therefore, what might work for me can be absolutely useless for someone else. But there is an advice that I think is universal enough and that would be: Just write. Write your way out of all of the doubts you ever get and enjoy the ride.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Well, I would certainly like to thank you for this opportunity. It was fun to share a little something about B. L. Pride and about Mila on a different level, so I really appreciate it. And to all the readers out there who love a great heart-breaking, spine-chilling story that consumes them and takes them so deep they forget about everything else for a while – check out Addiction. Maybe you’ll end up addicted and craving for more.Katie L Thompson Designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08802812700497367955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1190328313160425533.post-3859085605621320252014-11-10T14:33:00.000-08:002014-11-10T14:33:07.670-08:00Casey Adams - Letter #6

Dear lovely readers,

I have been awfully busy recently and so have not had time to write to you. I have been filling my days with school, clothes shopping, boys and many other very very important things. However, I am sparing a few minutes to talk to you today.

Firstly, there is bad news on the diary side of things. By this point in NaNoWriMo my author should have written 16,666 words. She has not. She has managed a measly 9,019.

Secondly, I am yet again boy-less.

Thirdly, I have spent far too much of my invisible money on clothes.

I hope you're having more luck than me - or that you are at least having more fun than I am.

Cheerio, fabulous readers, we will meet again,

Hi people,

So, I just read what was written today, and I think she's gone nuts. It's November and my author decided to write a Christmas scene. I think you'll like it though. Let's just say one word...Boys.

Maybe I'll share an extract with you sometime.
I have bad news - terrible news - the worst news ever! She, my author, hasn't written anything today. Not a word. Not even one! Hello again!

I'm back - I know, you were hoping this day would never come - sorry about that. Anyway, today is day two of NaNoWriMo - only twenty-eight more days to go. I'd like to tell you that there's been loads of progress on my diary, but there hasn't, so I can't tell you that. My author is SLOW! But, I guess I should give her a bit of a break. People tell me that this writing lark is actually pretty hard work - hey, who knew?

So, today I met up with the girls - yippee! Tomorrow I'll be going back to school - boo! Adults are always telling me that school years are the best years of your life - I may as well give up now!

I'll be back tomorrow with some more boring news on my boring life. Cheerio!

Dear Readers ...
Reader ... Dad

For the next month (all 30 days of it), you have to put up with
listening to me (well you don't have to, you could just stay away from this
page, but if you want to look at this page, then you have to put up with me).

Let's backtrack a few steps. My name is Casey Adams, I'm fourteen years old, and my life has well and truly gone down the pooper. My parents are alright - as alright as parents get anyway. My mum works a lot, and my dad thinks he's the funniest person in the world, although even the dog runs away when he starts off on one of his, oh so not funny, jokes. I'm just starting year ten at school - time for the hard work to begin, dreaded GCSEs (that's O-levels for all you old folk) - but that's not even the worst bit. Back to school means putting up with all the losers I left behind at the start of the summer. I mean, every school has the odd idiot around, but my school seems to be full of them. And then there are the bullies.

The only up point about my life is my friends. There's Ellie (the ginger one) and Poppy and Lily (the twins). Ellie spent most of the summer with her cousins, and I've barely seen the twins in between their fancy trips across the world. We went to Devon - it was nice, but not as nice as Australia or New Zealand would've been. It'll be nice to catch up with them all again.

So, why have I appeared now? Well, isn't it obvious? It's November. Time for NaNoWriMo. My story is finally about to begin. By the end of this month, my author will have written a whole 50,000 words about me in the form of a diary. 50,000 words is a lot! All I ask is that I get a boyfriend somewhere in all of that. *Sigh* There's no harm in dreaming, is there? She's even made a fantastic cover for my diary - but more on that another day.

That's enough rambling for now. I'll be back tomorrow.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Story 4 in the best-selling series, The Love List from some of
your favorite sweet romance authors.

A small town can be a friendly place to call home and an impossible place to
find a date. A shop owner starts a singles-mingle but only has three
attendees—not a single man in sight. The women continue to meet, and change
their name to The Love List. Each write names of single men and drop them into
a basket. The Love List seems a success as each of the women finds their true
love, except Laura. She is certain the basket is cursed.

Travis Jerome is new to town. He jumps at the chance to work on Laura’s B&B
remodel, to once again have the feel of a hammer in his hand. For something to
last a lifetime it must start with a strong foundation and build up from there.

He’s fighting to forget his past while she struggles to remember hers...

Doctor Josh Parker lives with guilt about his wife’s death every day.
He believes himself incapable of ever loving again, but when a
mysterious woman arrives in the Emergency Room, brutally beaten and
left for dead, he starts to feel something he hasn’t felt in far too long:
hope.

Alessandra Matthews has no memory of the events that led to her being
hospitalized. Worse, she has no idea who hurt her or why. Although she’s
uncertain of who she is, she is fully aware of one thing -- she’s falling
for her doctor.

Sometimes, what you don’t know can kill you...
As Josh and Alessa work to solve the mystery surrounding her past, she
soon realizes just how much danger she’s really in, but Josh refuses to
let her face the darkness of her memories alone. With each of them
struggling to put their pasts behind them, theirs is a DANGEROUS LOVE.
